Role Summary

The Financial Controller will hold day-to-day responsibility for the financial control and reporting of the business, ensuring accurate, timely and well-governed financial information. This is a managerial-level role, leading the finance function operationally and reporting into a senior finance leader.
The role is hands-on and suited to an experienced SME Financial Controller who enjoys being close to the numbers while managing a small team. Success will be measured through strong controls, reliable reporting and effective support to operational and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
Prepare management accounts, financial reports and variance analysis
Maintain strong financial controls, policies and procedures across the business
Oversee statutory accounts preparation and support external audit activity
Manage day-to-day cashflow, forecasting and working capital
Lead, coach and develop a small finance team
Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards, tax and regulatory requirements
Support budgeting and forecasting processes
Provide financial insight and analysis to support operational and project decision-making
Drive continuous improvement in finance processes and reporting

Key Requirements / Skills

Essential Requirements

Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) or equivalent experience
Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance management role
Background in an SME environment
Strong hands-on experience of financial control and management reporting
Experience working in project-led, engineering, construction or technical services businesses
Ability to manage and develop a small finance team
Strong attention to detail and a pragmatic, deliver-focused approach

Desirable Requirements

Experience of multi-entity or group reporting in a small business context
Systems improvement or process change experience
