Role Summary
The Financial Controller will hold day-to-day responsibility for the financial control and reporting of the business, ensuring accurate, timely and well-governed financial information. This is a managerial-level role, leading the finance function operationally and reporting into a senior finance leader.The role is hands-on and suited to an experienced SME Financial Controller who enjoys being close to the numbers while managing a small team. Success will be measured through strong controls, reliable reporting and effective support to operational and project stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare management accounts, financial reports and variance analysis
- Maintain strong financial controls, policies and procedures across the business
- Oversee statutory accounts preparation and support external audit activity
- Manage day-to-day cashflow, forecasting and working capital
- Lead, coach and develop a small finance team
- Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards, tax and regulatory requirements
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes
- Provide financial insight and analysis to support operational and project decision-making
- Drive continuous improvement in finance processes and reporting
Key Requirements / Skills
Essential Requirements
- Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) or equivalent experience
- Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance management role
- Background in an SME environment
- Strong hands-on experience of financial control and management reporting
- Experience working in project-led, engineering, construction or technical services businesses
- Ability to manage and develop a small finance team
- Strong attention to detail and a pragmatic, deliver-focused approach
Desirable Requirements
- Experience of multi-entity or group reporting in a small business context
- Systems improvement or process change experience
