Design Engineer – Fire Alarm Systems | Nottingham | Up to £40,000 DOE | Job Type: Full Time
We're working with an established fire and security systems specialist to recruit a Design Engineer for their Nottingham headquarters.
Established for over 25 years, our clients expertise spans the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of life safety systems for a wide range of commercial clients, and continued growth has created the need for an additional Design Engineer to join the team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced fire alarm design professional looking to join a technically focused business where quality, compliance and customer service are at the heart of every project.
The Role
Following project award, you'll take responsibility for producing fully compliant fire alarm system designs that meet client specifications, relevant legislation and industry standards.
Working closely with Sales, Project Managers, Installation and Commissioning Engineers, Consultants and Clients, you'll support projects throughout the design lifecycle, ensuring accurate technical documentation and providing design support through to successful project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed fire alarm system designs in line with BS 5839, project specifications and current industry standards.
- Review client specifications, tender documentation, drawings and site survey information.
- Prepare technical quotations, estimates and tender responses where required.
- Produce construction-ready drawings, device layouts, zoning plans, network schematics and equipment schedules.
- Create supporting design documentation including cause and effect matrices, battery calculations, cable calculations and technical submittals.
- Review contract documentation, consultant specifications and construction drawings.
- Attend design review meetings and collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with manufacturers, consultants, contractors and end users to ensure designs remain compliant and practical.
- Provide technical support during installation, commissioning and project handover.
- Manage design revisions and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Assist with project variations, technical problem-solving and value engineering opportunities.
About You
- Proven experience in the design of fire alarm systems.
- Strong working knowledge of BS 5839 and fire detection system design principles.
- FIA qualifications or other recognised industry certifications.
- Experience working with addressable fire alarm systems from leading manufacturers.
- The ability to interpret construction drawings, consultant specifications and technical documentation.
- Experience preparing technical quotations and cost estimates.
- Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
Desirable experience includes:
- AutoCAD or similar design software.
- Emergency Voice Communication (EVC), PA/VA and integrated life safety systems.
- Knowledge of CCTV, access control and intruder alarm systems.
A full UK driving licence is required.
